Tell Congress to Pass the AV START Act

Did you know that some 40,000 Americans were killed in an auto accident in 2017? What if we could decrease this number with American technology? Self-driving vehicles have tremendous potential to make travel safer. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that nearly 94% of auto crashes can be attributed to human error. Vehicles guided with advanced technology hold the promise of eliminating human error and creating safer roads. In addition, self-driving cars have the potential to reduce the number of drunk driving incidents as well as provide greater mobility for the elderly and people with disabilities.

Beyond the obvious safety benefits, there are economic benefits too. According to one study, traffic congestion costs the U.S. economy nearly $124 billion in 2013 and could add up to $2.89 trillion in cumulative losses by 2030. The use of self-driving cars could enable more efficient commutes and increase productivity while reducing harmful emissions.

Why are we waiting to unleash the safety, economic, and environmental benefits of this revolutionary technology?

Dear Senator,

I am writing to express my strong support for the Senate to take up and pass the AV START Act (S. 1885).

The Department of Transportation data show that human choice or error is a factor in approximately 94% of all crashes on U.S. roads—crashes that took the lives of approximately 40,000 men, women, and children in 2017. Development and eventual deployment of advanced vehicle technologies have the potential to save lives by significantly reducing the number of crashes. This decrease will also mean fewer roadway backups, diminishing both congestion and carbon emissions from vehicles.

Advanced vehicle technologies will also expand mobility options for people with disabilities, the elderly, and those who require access to more affordable transportation.

The AV START Act represents a historic opportunity for Congress to establish a technology neutral regulatory framework to advance these groundbreaking technologies while supporting research and investment in the U.S. A lack of congressional action on this important legislation will only cause uncertainty and delays in the development and ultimate deployment of such life-saving technologies.

Please support safer roads and vote in favor of the AV Start Act.
